17 Pithy Insights for Startup Employees:
If you’re not having fun, you’re in the wrong place.
Technically, I’m having fun @work … no schedules, no deadlines, two meetings a month, come to office when I please and work that is totally open source.
But unless I completely ignore people getting screwed over left, right and centre, I cannot be really happy doing what I do … a sort of “persecution” complex, which is a ticking timebomb which keeps repeating “… for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.”.
Of course, a startup doesn’t always have enough people to have this form of inequality.
The persecution complex is justified only if there is rampant inequal treatment and nepotism or other equivalent things – in which case you are in the wrong place anyways…
That said, it is also true that you cannot escape these things entirely in any office or for that matter startups. It is up to the individual to take a call on the balance of things
Heh, I have taken care of my “direct” problem (after 1 1/2 years of writing javascript & HTML at Y!).
The complex comes from seeing others cut out of the herd and slowly suffocated under work. It cannot be fixed individually, only trade union-esque unity works. And it will be a sad day when that is really needed.
