Yes! I have everything in my life all figured out – May be by Sunday I will be in a mood for a more literal post

  • Would like to insert a thought this post brought up…

    There was a scifi story I once read called “Outnumbering the dead”. Basic premise was that people don’t die of sickness (or was it old age? can’t remember well enough). The basic deal being that people lived really long, and the current population was greater in number than the total number of people who had died on the planet since the beginning of man.

    A concept this brought was that man still had to work, and working in one profession for 80-100 years got incredibly boring. So people usually went through one profession, got bored of it, started off on another, and so on and so forth. I’ve long believed this holds even now, that a potential career 35 years long can be too long for a person.(I know for a fact it is definitely too long for me.)

    Any thoughts on that? Pardon me for asking, but I’m curious – would this post have anything to do with the staircase at the end of the road that you’ve talked about before?

    • I am sure you must also be remembering my post about Not being able to be “Maverick” all your life someday you got to graduate and be “Top Gun”

      If you have seen the movie you must also remember the scene where “Goose” dies. What follows focuses on the hero “Maverick” feeling bad no where it is shown what “Viper” the instructor goes thru.

      Today I realised that… “Maverick” said to me today that he wants out – he is burnt out. I am not without a feeling of guilt for pushing him too hard. Right now I don’t want to rationalise, right now I am just focusing on learning to live with it.

      Sorry – I can’t be more specific or explicit.

      As I read the above it feels too melodramatic – I guess I will focus on the 1%

      • I only vaguely remember that post – I haven’t seen Top Gun, so it didn’t quite register. And I get the feeling I am missing out quite a bit too due to that. Will definitely have to see it now 🙂

          As for your original thought – the concept of people living long and having multiple profession is also(?) expounded in Asimov’s sci-fi novels.

          Well, up till now I have already had 3 distinct professions, Stock Trader, Doctor and now a Programmer. I feel that I am going to stick with this one for a long time. The priorities now are much different from what they were when I was 20 or 26. Though I still don’t see a staircase OR the end of the road.

          Right now I am more a father to my son than anything else, everything else is just on hold for next 15 years

              I became interested in stock market when Swaraj Paul tried to take over Escorts was in it during the Harshad Mehta days and got out when the FII’s came in.

              I had made a million (Rupees that is) before my 21st birthday after which I just kind of lost the incentive and foolishly got out with the cash…

              Please don’t ask me where did all that money go… and why… At 21 you tend to believe you are immortal and invincible

              Yeah! The ride was fun while it lasted, if you want to go for it do it while age and responsibilities (lack of) are still on your side

    • this is so true. well, maybe if you’re immortal, changing careers every 35 years makes sense, but for the rest of us, it may have to be more frequent.

      I know there’s so much I want to do, but it isn’t possible to have two professions at the same time. Sometimes I feel that programming should go back to being the hobby that it once was for me, and that I should look for a different career.

      Well, Santana’s finished playing Black Magic Woman, and US3’s started Cantaloop… maybe that’s what I should be doing too… Remix my life 😉

    • Because, My Love, there is always hope!

      • Mom always tell me, jo hota hai, ache ke liye hota hai. She even rationalised the fact that I repeated B.Sc. first and second years, eventually putting in 5 years in B.Sc. but working part time and gaining invaluable experience. 🙂

        Dunno if I am making sense but there would always be something more you would want to have in life.
