Some Indian Palm Squirrels have 3 stripes and others 5

“UhUh!” This was the first thing which Aasim said when he saw him for the first time, the name stuck. UhUh was the first of the squirrel orphans which we have reared in the past two years. He also was the youngest that we ever found. In fact it is quite a miracle that he survived. We did not know anything about what to give him, we tried diluted milk which he vehemently rejected, after a lot of researching on the web Swati came up with a formula. High fat scalded milk + Honey + a drop of multivitamin syrup. I was scared that the high fat content would be too much for such a tiny thing, I also had my doubts about the high temperature at which the milk was to be fed.

He grew up to be a nice and playful pet, would actively seek out one of us and give hugs to the thumb or fingers, he was free to go out but would return in the evening after a bit of cajoling and promises of Monaco biscuits, Monaco was the first solid thing he ate and would love to lie on his back in either mine or Swati’s lap and nibble away to bliss. He even became friends with our kitten!!

Unfortunately we couldn’t keep his faith 🙁 One evening while he was playing in the dining room a cat came in and caught him. Though I could rescue him unhurt he was too shaken. The next morning he left and took charge of his life never to return home. For a few days after the incident he would still allow us to touch him while he was in the trees and would readily accept a biscuit but he never allowed anyone to hold him. Once he found a mate all his interactions stopped.

But both of us felt happy… …

None of the orphans (we lost count after 8) whom we raised after UhUh were so responsive or so trusting. You can see his entire album here

Which Plant Are You?

  • You forgot to mention – UhUh had to be handled very carefully – like a neonate – touching him only after washing hands and keeping his basket sterile all the times till he started venturing out on his own.
You also omitted that he was oh-so-scared to even look towards the sky when he was taken outside for the first couple of times.

  • wow! those pictures are beautiful.!
Isn’t it fun the things one does has a parent, that maybe we wouldn’t normally do,
that was a gift to sit and see those pictures!
    thank you

    • Thanks, your comments are appreciated – there are more pictures to come soon 🙂

  • Beautiful pictures! I wish I had one of those as pets too, or at least as a daily visitor 🙂

    • Thanks. If I am not mistaken Indian Palm Squirrels are classified as pests in Australia (or at-least some parts of)

      • I’ve never seen any squirrels here, but I guess they must be in Australia some where 🙂

  • Lovely pics.
