I read an article in India Today about "finishing schools" for schoolchildren. I think they really do finish them.

We seem always to be concerned with form and not with substance, from wanting a "fair, beautiful" bride to wanting children who will give the appearance of smartness even if they are not actually so.

....and yet I can't find it in my heart to blame parents who see the dreadful competition around and are desparate to give their kids any edge that would help them....

My own daughter, who was very independent and mature for her age, and is also very short, has had innumerable experiences of people talking down to her because she looked small, invalidating her point of view or her experiences, and this has always irritated her and occasionally brought her to tears of frustration.

...and about Aasim....isn't it nice how your children keep surprising you when you think you know them well?
