Muttony gluttony

Garlic

Friday was Bakr-Id this meant an entire long weekend of muttony gluttony. Swati has really perfected her Briyani to the exact way I like, that I cannot describe in words how I like it will give you an idea of what was involved :D

Since it was a weekend people and relatives who usually do not drop in also did and not to be left behind we also reciprocated with the same. I feel that I have eaten enough to not want to see any kind of meat in my plate for a long time – arrrrghhhhh!!! DO NOT OPEN THAT FREEZER DOOR

Despite all the happenings I did manage to steal 20 min and play in my new studio with my new lights, for lack of an interesting subject I just grabbed a couple of garlic pods, placed them on a mirror and tried to get the texture of the skin, after a dozen or so shots I did manage to click one which was presentable. Lighting still life setups is an art in itself, guess finally this 20 year old book will be utilised to its fullest.

I also played a bit with mod_rewrite rules and now pictures at my site can be accessed with a much shorter URL like http://tariquesani.net/image/1010 instead of http://tariquesani.net/displayimage.php?pos=-1010 this is an admin settable feature which will be in Coppermine NG

did you break a clove on purpose to place it in the front?
care to tell me more about how you lit the subject. and did you use spot metering?

I really wish I had taken a shot of the setup – I did not :(

Yes the clove in front was a deliberate setup (there was some skin as well be I felt it cluttered the frame)

The setup is lit with a single light set at an intensity of 17 joules with a snoot. It is placed slightly behind and about 30 degrees above the right garlic pod (see the shadow of the stem on the right pod), there was a thermocol sheet on the left for a reflector.

I do not have an exposure meter – thats why a dozen odd shots were needed :D

thank you, tarique. more questions about your photos coming your way. i’ve just picked back up on photography. i’ll need critiques on my photos too.:-)

Most welcome – I will critique you pics when you post, however a site like http://photosig.com is a great place to learn, also I found that when you critique other peoples work you learn better as you put in words (thus in concious thought) as to what you liked in a picture and what you did not.

whoa! nice picture! btw, what lights do you have?

Thank you, I have 2 Simpex-Pro Digital and 3 Prolinchrom-23, the later are very difficult to work with my Nikon 5700 due to very high intensity so are used for lighting backrops and as hair light
