Yesterday for the first time after Aasim, Swati and I went out to watch a play “Surya Ki Antim Kiran Se Surya Ki Pehli Kiran Tak” starring Neena Gupta and Rajendra Gupta.
Really well enacted and well played out but I have to agree with Swati that despite the play being about the Queen’s sexual liberation it is still too male centric.
A bit more amusing and disgusting were the comments from the so called intellectual audience… The one which took the cake was “Women in India were the most liberated lot till the Muslims invaded the country” I don’t know whether to laugh about it or be sad. Anyway we really enjoyed ourselves – we picked up Aasim (soundly asleep) from Swati’s mom at midnight… …
If ‘intellectual audiences’ must be invited, there must also be a way to shut them up

Your post reminded me of how angry I was when the govt. wanted any mention of beef-eating to be removed from history textbooks. I hate it when people rewrite history to suit themselves and present the revised version as the whole truth, without indicating the other interpretations or points of view. Readers deserve better than that.
Rewriting of history has a long history itself, almost every ruler did it in the past and will continue to try and do it.
That doesn’t make it right. History by its very nature is tinged with the perceptions of the recorder, even if the person is being most objective. I have no objections to people reinterpreting events, just as long as they do not deliberately shield people from the fact that the event took place.
Well, we had this in college. The subject was Foundation Course (Commerce). There was a chapter on the plight of women in India. It read that the Indian woman had a powerful position in the family. Women had a lot of freedom, and even exercised decision-making powers. Around the 10th-11th century, India was invaded by rulers from western Asia, and things changed. Perhaps similar material can be found on the web.
I think it might be “politically incorrect” to make statements like that in public, but one cannot be sure that it is false.

“Women in India were the most liberated lot till the Muslims invaded the country,” should be rewritten as, “women in India were the most liberated lot till some Muslim rulers invaded the country.” That’s it, I don’t see any problem with that (I’m not referring to the historical correctness of that statement, which can be hard to discern).

Life is full so many problems, of different types and sizes. I wonder from where do people find time to make such useless comments on other religions. I mean…what is the point?
I think this is a classic case of taking things too personally. The comment is not about some religion.
