I must be getting old …

I must be getting old way too old for my own good – a while back I wanted to type PMS and I typed PHP, an hour earlier I stood in front of the Microwave a good 15 seconds before I could recall the correct sequence on the keypad, Microwave thing has happened once before as well. I cannot decide if it is funny or scary!!

Naah!! must be the heat

Hobbies … …

A bit of free time in the afternoon had me wondering about my hobbies. The best I had – I turned into my profession, so that leaves me with what? Reading – not too much of creativity involved. Stamps – I have not touched in past 10 years and anyways who writes letters now.

Sketching – The problem with sketching is once I get started with a drawing I just cannot put it down till it is complete.

Then there is photography, hmmm… guess it is time I did some still life photography, B/W pics of some of Swati’s crystal collection will be great! Maybe this Sunday I can cajole Swati into posing for me, have some ideas in lighting which I would like to try out.

One of these days I must make Vivek (another of Swati’s school time friend and the guy who took my pic for the ProPHP4 cover) intro me to some models, maybe we can hijack his studio as well. Yes – Swati is also into photography – runs in her blood – her father was a professional photographer.

I also have a desperate itch to pick up a new skill, one thing I always wanted was to be able to play an musical instrument, but I still dont have the time for it.

Memories of her!!

Swati

I found this picture of her yesterday taken by me almost 13 years ago at a friend’s farmhouse. She was 21 I was 22 ….

The most hilarious part is that these pics were taken to show to the prospective grooms which her parents were searching. We were great friends (well already more than friends 😉 but had never considered marriage as an option at all!

In-fact we were on a rather self destructive path hoping to go down in a blaze of glory abiding by the wishes of our parents. Both of us were heart broken from our respective *first really serious* love affairs. Our belief in love was shaken to the core “Whats love got to do with it” was the theme song for those days.

We did not think we were in love with each other – we were just satifying a need, hmmm… we still are we still are!!

How it all began is another warm memory which perhaps I will write some other day and then may be someday I will write how we decided to get married and then fell in love. No! my mind is not playing tricks on the sequence of events. For the interested here is another picture from that series

A cool day!

Nagpur was yesterday lashed by rains and hailstorm (yes hailstorm!!). This resulted in considerable lowering of temperature.

Yesterday evening we went out for dinner with Shishir Totre (Swati’s school time friend) his wife and another couple, invited by Shishir, to Dwarka an open air restaurant. The food was nice BUT more importantly Aasim thoroughly enjoyed himself and all the staff was very kid-friendly. Nothing much about it, the third couple got thoroughly bored as we caught up on all the old school talk. I think Shishir’s wife also got bored but then she is un-fathomable.

Have got back the bedroom from the painters and I will finally sleep in my own bed – this was just the doors and windows done – I dread the walls being done … … BUT then some things have to be bravely put up with.

The first half of the day just rushed by in putting back the mess into the empty neatness of the home, the second half just drifted lazily watching Asterix with Aasim and talking with Swati.

Finally found some time to get a hair cut and thankfully the barber did not insist that “Sahab, aur mut katao accha nahi dikhega” (if your Hindi is really poor – Sir, don’t get it shortened further wont look good)

So now have hair which do not need combing and can feel the air tickling the… … *scalp* 😉

Surprisingly Swati did not throw a fit – hmm… we rarely go out socially anywhere.

Plus I have embarked on a new project so she wouldn’t want me upset. The project itself would have been more fun had it been on Linux, My windoze machine is seriously underpowered – any windoze machine is seriously underutilized any ways, BUT “papi pet ka saval hai”. Will forgo the my crude translation on that one.

My fever is gone but has left me weak – 4 hours on the computer and I am done for the day. Unfortunately now Aasim has got the virus.

The heat the heat … was thinking of days 10 years ago when both myself and Swati would go out 2PM in the height of summer sun to a friends apartment so that we could be together alone. That place use to hotter than a furnace but we didn’t mind one bit, sipping the mandatory coke and munching a bar of 5 Star (that was our lunch) we still enjoyed… …

Now 2 hours of graciousness by MSEB and we are barking at each other.

Yes we do fight (a lot?), will write about that when it is not so hot.

Me? A job? Naaah!!

Yesterday found me refusing the 3rd job in just as many weeks. I wonder why people are feeling that I am ready to take up a job?

I wont be able to work under anyone any ways – This was one of the prime reason for starting SANIsoft, I can only work for myself and my family, Yeah! got a slave driver for a CEO but then she is mine as well 🙂

Besides we are very very reluctant to move out of Nagpur, basically because I know the doctors here – as we grow old we are going to need them – this was reinforced after what I saw at Apollo Hyderabad when my elder brother had his coronary by-pass done last year.

Nagpur suxs bad but it also grows on you … …

On a different note – I released a very simple and small PHP class phpZipLocator – It can be used to calculate distances between zip codes as well as give you a set of codes within x Miles of a given Zip code. Of course it will work for any set of data where the latitude and longitude is known. Grab it at https://freshmeat.net/projects/ziploc – most similar commercial offerings are more than $250

We will not be able to use our bedroom for at least 2 more days – Piling on to Aasim’s room.
God!! I am feeling so drained out the heat is bad and with this painting going on you just cant keep the indoors cool. Guess will call it a day

Now even the bedroom has been handed over to the painters 🙁
I am sitting in the Lab yawning … …

Achievable goals OR aiming low

Restricted my self to bed because of fever and a very bad sore throat. Apart from completing Ringworld by Larry Niven (I am not reading the other 2) I was thinking that all I needed to fulfill my current dreams was just $5000, mind you I have a lot of dreams but the most of them are not expensive things. The second thought was heck this is a very easy target – 6 to 8 months? even less …

The chain of thought continued to my thinking that I just wasn’t dreaming big (delirious?!) BUT the rational part asserted my dreams dont really have a price tag. Those that do are very much affordable.

BUT then even things which dont have a price tag just fall into place – like for example having my name on the cover of a PHP book, I wished it and it just happened. In fact in this case the offer came the very next day – This was @ IT.com, Bangalore…

Whatever – call it aiming low to avoid disappointment OR setting achievable goals to avoid disappointment – it is working fine for now.

Luck of Teela Brown?

is one resourceful woman 😉 She in a stroke solved the manpower problem which I anticipated yesterday BUT that does not mean I have dozens of PHP programmers at my disposal. I get to select from a batch of 20-25 which 6 to take for the 3 week course, then 2 get selected for 4 weeks further training – we pay decent stipend – At the end of which if they are “commercial code” material they get to stay…

Heck!! this will take toooo much of my time. Can’t think of a shortcut.

There are ASP guys swarming around like EColi in s**t but no PHP guys decent enough to write even the Sunday afternoon variety of code let alone someone who can do Session, Auth and Perms, not to mention OOHForms and templates.

Got to change this state of affairs atleast for Nagpur.

The situation is rediculous, we are refusing projects because we don’t have hands, in a market where people will kill for even a single project.

The worst slap on the face was Neha quit yesterday to join a VB sweat shop and at a lower salary after 8 weeks invested in her!!!

Atleast she could have taken up a PHP job!! and why? because her father said so…

I anyways dont want people who at 21 cannot take their own decisions.

Lousy day!! Ungrateful creatures, Petty politics!!!
Don’t want to talk about it (as yet) :-/
